Award winning photographer David Ellingsen’s tough, raw, but always gracious portraiture has attracted commissions from global magazines such as the NY TIMES, BMW, TIME INC, PEOPLE, and MARIE CLAIRE, as well as advertising clients like MTV/NICKELODEON, BC HYDRO, TRANSLINK, and the esteemed DAVID SUZUKI FOUNDATION. David shoots commercial work with an element of his fine art in each shot; integrity, honesty and precise lighting within a strong graphic layout.
The APPLIED ARTS ILLUSTRATION & PHOTOGRAPHY 2009 ANNUAL awarded David the prestigious winning titles in both the ADVERTISING and FASHION & BEAUTY categories. He has also recently received multiple awards and honourable mentions from the INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS (the LUCIE’S) in Los Angeles, BLACK & WHITE magazine in San Francisco, PX3 in Paris, and APPLIED ARTS in Toronto. David exhibits his work in fine art galleries in both Canada & the US, as well as a solo exhibition at the 2009 LISHUI INTERNATIONAL PHOTO FESTIVAL in China.
David was raised on a rural organic farm on Cortes Island at the northern end of the Georgia Straight in British Columbia, Canada. In 1986 he relocated to Victoria, BC, where he began his studies in photography and from where he based extensive travels across North and Central America, South East Asia and the United Kingdom. In 1999 David moved to Vancouver, BC, to further his education and pursue a career in photography. David is a strong believer in giving back to his community, and is proud to support many different charity organizations such as Journalists for Human Rights, Foster Parents Plan, HIV Support Services, among others.
